#164 Hampden 8 Marks - LROK Aged 1 Year
Let’s continue with DOKtober! Today I am reviewing the 3rd mark, LROK, and this time I have The Younger, a pure LROK blend, to try with my 1 year. I also have what is potentially a pure LROK blend, Stolen Rum Overproof, but there is some debate about whether it is really LROK or if it is HLCF.
Review
Smell
It reminds me more of OWH than LFCH. There’s lots of banana and pineapples on the nose, but also some blueberries, and it just smells much more fruity and tropical, whereas LFCH was pretty much straight banana with a touch of cinnamon on the nose. Unaged LROK has the same forward banana and pineapple, but also an interesting grassy, peppery nose which I don’t get as much from the aged version. The aged version, however, pops with more banana and pineapple, and has a bit of a vanilla caramel note to it.
Taste
It’s very flavorful and delicious. Super strong pineapple, banana, and blueberry. The unaged is similar but has a bit of a fake grape candy/soda finish, as well as just a younger, rougher character, but not necessarily all entirely in a bad way. Even the young LROK is delicious, but the 1 year aged version just comes across as more refined and has those distinct caramel notes that I think work really well.
In a daiquiri, I think this might be my favorite daiquiri so far out of the marks. Very fruity, very balanced, and no real off flavors, while the LFCH daiquiri just wasn’t quite there. It was a bit off and a bit unbalanced. However, unaged LROK also makes a great daiquiri, and it’s pretty much tied as far as which one I like more.
Verdict 6.5/10
So far a pretty impressive mark. I enjoy its brightness and fruity flavor, and slight acidity compared to some of the other ones. It’s as well balanced as OWH, but just packs more flavor.
