So, for the past few reviews, I’ve done a disclaimer up front that I know that Planteray doses their rums with sugars, and that might make me rate them more favorably because more added sugar = more tasty. But actually, as I was doing research into this rum, it (spoiler alert) is my favorite Planteray rum so far, yet, it is also the least sweetened. I guess added sugar wasn’t the huge boost that I thought it would be for my palate.

Note: Blend of rums from WIRD in Barbados (unaged), TDL in Trinidad (aged 2-3 years) and Long Pond in Jamaica (mostly unaged, a bit aged 10 years)

Review

Smell

Immediately you’re hit with the classic smell of Jamaican funk. I went into more detail with the Appleton and Wray & Nephew reviews, but now I feel like all Jamaican funk pretty much smells the same, because it pretty much smells exactly like them. Please let me know if there are any Jamaican rums that have the funk, but it’s a different funk from the ones that I’ve tried so far.

Taste

It has quite a strong taste of Jamaican funk. It’s very nice, it’s stronger in the pineapple and overripe banana goodness than Appleton Estate Signature. I would say it tastes like watered down Wray & Nephew OP. It’s totally sippable, in my opinion— there is no bitterness or medicinal taste, and the hotness of the alcohol is very moderate. The taste lingers on the palate and continues on the exhale.

In a daiquiri, it’s strong, sweet, sour, and funky. It just makes a great daiquiri.

In coke, the sweet and funky taste shine through, and it’s pleasant. It’s hard to pick whether the Barbados 5 year or this one are my new favorite to mix with coke, as they’re both very good.

This is called 3 stars because the 3 rums from the 3 different countries are the stars, but if we’re being real, the Jamaica unaged is the rockstar singer out front, and Trinidad and Barbados play bass. Like Original Dark, I think they add a drop of 10 year just to be able to say that they did. I was actually surprised that the rum from Planteray that I liked the most also had the least amount of added sugar. I would put it in the same category as Appleton Estate Signature (my favorite rum up until this point, rated 7.5/10). And, here’s the thing— if I could only drink 1 rum for the rest of my life, right now, I would pick this rum, because as a “one rum to rule them all”, its flavor and versatility rock. However, when I am making myself a tiki drink that calls for a blended lightly aged rum, I do 3 parts Appleton Estate Signature and 1 part Wray & Nephew, and I don’t think that this rum alone beats that combo. I would give that combo a 9/10, it’s just become my go-to. Planteray 3 star still gives it a run for its money, so I absolutely am comfortable giving it 8/10, barely edging out Appleton Estate Signature as my favorite.

June 11, 2026 Update:

I still like this rum quite a bit, and it has stood the test of time as a cheap, tasty, and versatile white rum. Downgrading only a little due to new rating system.

December 18, 2025 Update:

Honestly, this rum has been coming off as rather bland lately, especially with how flavorful rum can get. Now I think it’s tied with San Zanj and Breezeway Blend at 6.5/10.
